Old Post Road

Robert Murdock

I couldn't fall asleep last night
Threw the covers from my bed
Took a drive down suburban streets
To let my thoughts unwind
and clear my head
Something strange occurred to me
As the sweat rolled down my face
My restless heart began to pound
When I arrived in a familiar place

Same old houses
with a new coat of paint
Different faces peeking out of them now
They look at me
like I'm a stranger in town
But my roots are planted
deep in this ground

Tidal wave of memories
rush through my mind
Driving down the Old Post Road
Searching for the childhood I left behind
Driving down the Old Post Road
I was driving down the Old Post Road
Driving down the Old Post Road
We couldn't wait to break out of here
Took my daddy's car and went for a ride
Drove it straight into Mirror Lake
Boy, did me and Bobby catch hell that night

Those summer nights with Sandy
under the stars
The weeping willow
where I stole my first kiss
We pledged our love
and carved our names in a heart
The tree grew stronger
while we grew apart

[chorus]

[instrumental break]

As I drove back home and crept into bed
And the sentimental journey was done
I remembered what my father said
He told me "Don't forget
where you came from"

Tidal wave of memories
rushED through my mind
Thinking 'bout the Old Post Road
Is it me who's changed
through all of these times
Or is it the Old Post Road?
Is it me who's changed
Or Old Post Road?

Take me back to Old Post Road
C'mon take me back to Old Post Road
Take me back to Old Post Road
